New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
